Obituary
Marilyn Jane Lloyd, age 90, of Burlington, died at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday, December 23, 2021, surrounded by her family, at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa.
Born January 20, 1931, at Hawarden, Iowa, she was the daughter of Warren and Madge (Sidwell) Nanninga. On June 14, 1953, she married Richard G. Lloyd at Hawarden. Richard died December 19, 2005.
Mrs. Lloyd was a 1948 graduate of Hawarden High School and a 1950 graduate of Iowa State Teacher’s College (now the University of Northern Iowa), Cedar Falls, Iowa, in elementary education and she also studied at Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. She was an elementary teacher at Marcus, Iowa, from 1950–1952 and at Sioux City, Iowa, from 1952–1954. After moving with her family to Burlington in 1971 (when her husband, Richard, was transferred with Bonewitz Chemicals), she worked as an associate in the Burlington Community School District for ten years, retiring in 1995.
Marilyn was a member and past president of Treble Clef Club, a member of the Retired School Personnel Association and president for four years, a member of PEO Chapter P (holding various offices) and of the King’s Daughters Auxiliary.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Aldersgate Class (Sarah Circle), and the United Methodist Women. She taught piano many years, had been pianist for the Rotary Club’s noon meetings since the 1990s, and was a church pianist on a substitute basis for various Burlington churches.
Marilyn enjoyed attending Burlington’s Civic Music events as well as All Strings Attached Orchestra concerts at Carroll, Iowa, to watch her son, Charles, and daughter, Rosemary (and her daughters) perform in this orchestra. During Christmas, she regularly hosted dinners and holiday gift exchanges at her home for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed family reunions as well as travels across the country with her husband. A highlight was her trip with her daughter, Rosemary to England.
Survivors include two sons, Charles (Christine) Lloyd of Nevada, David (Geralyn) of Burlington; two daughters, Margaret (John) Wozniak of Burlington, and Rosemary (Tom) Cameron of Arcadia; 13 grandchildren: Audra (Rob) Poterucha and James (Mackenzie) Lloyd; Andrew Lloyd, Carmen (Tyler) DeHague, and Hannah (Eric) Baker; Melinda (Tyler) Bickel, Eric (Sidney) Wozniak, Laura (Kendall) Durkee, and Martin Wozniak; Millicent, Elise, Bridget, and Maris Cameron; nine great grandchildren: Edward and Kimberly Bickel, Kennedy, Charlotte, and Hazel Durkee, Will and Maria Poterucha, Calvin Baker, and Owen Lloyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister (Beulah Simons), and her brother, (Wallace Nanninga).
Visitation will be from noon to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Lunning Chapel, with family meeting friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The funeral for Marilyn Lloyd will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at First United Methodist Church, Burlington. Pastors Jacob Yochum and Joan Rodgers will officiate. Burial will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Loft on Jefferson, Burlington, following the burial.
Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church in Burlington and the Burlington Municipal Band.
