GALESBURG - Warren Allison "Cookie" Cook, 87, Galesburg, died at 5:10 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2019, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg.
He was born Oct. 9, 1931, in Burlington, Iowa, to Sherman Allison and Alberta Verlee (Baxter) Cook. He married Betty Ruth Lawyer on Nov. 25, 1954, in Burlington. She preceded him in death Dec. 27, 2018.
Surviving are two daughters, Kim Allison (and Jack) Norris of Galesburg and Katharine Ann (and Terry) Campbell of Abingdon; a sister, Joan White of Burlington, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jill (and Rex Hudson) Norris, Christopher (and Emily) Norris, Tony (and Krista Line) Campbell, and Tyson Campbell; five great-grandchildren, Connor Campbell, Brianna Campbell, Jack Norris, Allison Norris, and McKenna Hudson; four sisters-in-law, Barbara (and Harold) Lindgren of Cypress, Texas, Beverley (and Bill) McGuffey of Ventura, California, Bonnie Lawyer of Monett, Missouri, and Bonita (and Kevin Young) Smith of Washburn, Missouri; his stepfather-in-law, James Shelton of Fort Madison, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Emilie Schultz.
Warren graduated from Burlington High School in 1949. He was in the United States Army for two years, serving in Berlin. He was an engineer for CB&Q Railroad and then Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years and retired Oct. 1, 1993. He was a member of First Christian Church and a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 in Galesburg. He was also a member of Lake Bracken Country Club for 45 years and lived at Lake Bracken for 32 years. Warren was very active. He enjoyed handball, bowling, sailing, golfing and bicycling. He also enjoyed jogging when jogging was not as common as it is today. He was very social and enjoyed playing cards with friends. He went through the A.A. program and his many years of sobriety was a source of pride, which was evident by his automatic response to the question, "How ya doing?" To which he responded, "Sober."
Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
