Obituary
Don Gordon McCarthy, 90, of Burlington, died Friday, March 13, 2020 at Oak View Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born August 24, 1929 in Alton, Iowa he was the son of Milton and Gertrude (Talsma) McCarthy. He married L. Edalene Moone on August 23, 1953 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Don was a music teacher for three years for the Hull School District, six years for the Chandler School District and finally for Burlington Community School District for 30 years until his retirement in 1992.
He earned his Bachelors degree in Music through Morningside College and his Masters of Arts degree through the University of South Dakota. He served in the Army as Corporal during the Korean war.
He was member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a life member of the National Educational Association.
Survivors include his wife L. Edalene McCarthy of Burlington; three sons Shaun McCarthy of Iowa City and Matthew McCarthy and Andrew McCarthy both of Burlington; seven grandchildren, Kelsey Strope, John McCarthy, Mitch McCarthy, Mackenzie Nelson, Clint Bell, Beth Ita and J.T. McCarthy; six great grandchildren; Deacon Strope, Braya Strope, Peyton McCarthy, Reese Nelson, Becca Nelson and Tess Nelson; two sisters, Janet Anderson of Akron, Iowa and Mary Pals of Clear Lake, Iowa; one brother Mark McCarthy of Clear Lake, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Brad Anderson, Chace Anderson, Rustin Pals, Sarah Jeninkson, Brian McCarthy, John McCarthy and Patrick McCarthy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Tom and Jack, one niece Michelle and one nephew Warren.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. McCarthy will be held at a later date.
A private family inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the Brueck Home at Hope Haven and Asbury United Methodist Church.
