Obituary
Peggy Roberta (Goben) Shupe, formerly of Burlington, Iowa passed away on June 22, 2021, in Liberty, MO. Peggy was born on December 31, 1934, to William and Julia (Fitzgerald) Goben and was the third of four children. She graduated from Danville High School in May 1952. After high school, she worked for Commercial Credit where she met the love of her life, Maynard L. Shupe. They wed on August 14, 1955, in Middletown, IA and were married for 46 years until Maynard’s death on December 13, 2001.
Peggy worked in various administrative positions involving bookkeeping and office management throughout her life. She was employed by Skelgas, Neff ‘s Shoe Store alongside her best friends and owners, Jim and Bonny Augsburger, the Motor Vehicle department of the Des Moines County Treasurer’s office and finished her working days at Fleck Sales Company. Upon retirement, Peggy and Maynard moved to Bethany, MO to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Peggy enjoyed an active social life and loved spending time with her family and friends. Most Friday nights were spent with friends at the Suburban Supper Club and taking lots of fun trips. Peggy and Maynard had five children and they were incredibly involved in each of the kids’ activities. Peggy was a troop leader for Cub Scouts, a homeroom mom for each of her children, was active in PTA and never missed one of the kids’ sporting events. Summers were spent taking vacations in the family station wagon usually to an amusement park or a ballpark to watch the Cubs, Cardinals or Royals.
Her children were very dear to her, but being a grandparent was her favorite role. She attended as many functions of the grandkids as she could and kept in touch with each of them as they grew into adulthood. She was always there to listen when they needed her advice or just wanted to fill her in on what was going on in their lives. She encouraged them to pursue their dreams and was forever their biggest supporter.
Later in life, Peggy enjoyed staying close to home, cheering on the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, the Iowa Hawkeyes and even supported the Iowa State Cyclones and Missouri Tigers while her grandkids attended those schools. She never missed an episode of Jeopardy! and loved completing any type of crossword puzzle.
Peggy will be greatly missed by her family, including her five children: Teresa Beydler and Scott Shupe of Bethany, MO; Jeff Shupe (Julie) of Raytown, MO; Matthew (Todd) Shupe (Tiffany) of Elletsville, IN; and Julie Carlson (Tyler) of Pleasant Hill, IA.; her eight grandchildren: Brandon (Liz) Beydler, Ryan Beydler and Jacob (Hiroki Kobayashi) Beydler, Zachary (Emily) Shupe, Nicholas Shupe, Jillian Carlson, Alex Carlson and Madelyn Shupe; and her two great-grandchildren: Sydney Beydler and Brody Beydler. Peggy also leaves behind one sister-in-law, Sheila Goben and two nephews, Randy (Marvalene) Cousins and Philip (Tracy) Goben, along with several great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Shupe, her parents, sisters June Cousins and Jeanne Goben, brother, Jerry Goben and several extended family members.
