Susan Marie von Harz, 73, of Burlington, died at 2:15 AM Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born May 20, 1946, in Flint, MI, she was the daughter of Robert B. and Sally Folsom Allen. On July 16, 1966, she married John von Harz at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Burlington.
Susan was first and foremost a homemaker. She also worked as the Development Director for the Girl Scouts of America and as a pre-school teacher, operating her own pre-school for a time.
She was a 1964 graduate of Burlington High School. She attended the University of Iowa.
Susan was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Altar and Rosary Society for St. Paul's, and P.E.O. She was a past school board president for Burlington Area Catholic Schools. Susan enjoyed golfing (but only for the first three holes), playing duplicate bridge, and volunteering. She gave many years of service to the St. Vincent de Paul organization and Lee County Hospital in Florida where she and John kept a vacation home. Susan's favorite way to spend her time was with her children and grandchildren who were her world.
Survivors include her husband, John of Burlington; one daughter, Elizabeth von Harz of Johnston, IA; two sons, John (Keli) von Harz of Urbandale, and Robert von Harz of Iowa City; seven grandchildren, Bella von Harz, Brooke Sandstoe, Tucker von Harz, Thomas John Sandstoe, Madalyn von Harz, Ethan von Harz, and Liam von Harz; and three sisters, Judith Goodwin of Des Moines, Kathy (Bruce) Mason of Southport, NC, and Mary (Pat) Nassif of Issaquah, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Friday, February 28, 2020 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. von Harz will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 28, 2020, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Rev. Father Daniel R Dorau as Celebrant and Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Con-Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Burlington Golf Club following the burial.
Memorials have been established for the Great River Hospice House and Burlington Area Catholic Schools.
