Raymond Theodore Markus, 96, of Burlington, died at 11:23 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Great River Hospice House.
Born November 22, 1921 in Grant Township, Union County, IA, he was the son of Ray Henry and Mary Melvina Belle (Estes) Markus. He married Wanda Thomas on June 6, 1948. Two sons were born from this union. She died October 22, 1974. He later married Bessie Rayburn on May 14, 1977. She preceded him in death on June 7, 2006.
Raymond was a 1941 graduate of Creston High School in Creston, IA. He was drafted into the United States Army in December of 1943 at Camp Dodge, IA and completed basic training at Camp Gordon in Georgia. He arrived at Frome, England in November of 1944, crossing the English Channel into France Christmas night of 1944. He entered Germany in March of 1945 and was hit by shrapnel on April 7, 1945. He received a purple heart and was discharged from the army at Camp McCoy, WI on April 13, 1946. He attended Creston Jr. College under the GI bill and took accounting courses at A.I.B. in Des Moines, IA. He worked as a postal clerk at the Burlington post office for 25 years until his retirement in 1983.
He attended West Avenue Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling, church, and country western music.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Ray Markus of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Willard Frank Markus of Burlington, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, 5 sisters and 1 brother. Pastor Gerald Dzawo will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for West Avenue Baptist Church.
