Obituary
Mr. Harold H. (“Mr. Spudnut”) Schnicker, 90, of Burlington, died Sunday, June 21, 2020, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born March 2, 1930, he was the son of Chester “Chet” H. and Elsie Clara (Hofmann) Schnicker. He married Virginia “Gin” Mae Smith on December 2, 1951, at Zion United Church of Christ. She died September 4, 2011.
Harold worked for the Burlington Waterworks Department for 17 years. In 1966, he decided to open his own business, Harold’s Spudnut Shop, on Jefferson Street in Burlington. In 1971, he opened a second location on Roosevelt Avenue where he continued making his donut delicacies for over 25 years.
He was a lifelong member of Zion United Church of Christ, a past member of the Burlington Golf Club, Eagles Aerie #150, and the Square Dancing Club. Harold enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening, and boating. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams.
Harold graduated from Burlington High School in 1948. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict from 1948-1949 and became active in the reserves from 1950-1956.
He is survived by his two children: David (Cathy) Schnicker of Burlington and Diane (Dan) Paddock of St. Peters, Missouri; his daughter-in-law Michele Schnicker of Burlington; seven grandsons, Bryan (Sarah) Schnicker, Jason (Holli) Schnicker, Ryan (Stephanie) Nagrocki, Nicholas (Stephanie) Schnicker, Dustin Paddock, Dylan Paddock, and Drew Paddock; one granddaughter, Jamey (Jeremy) Holder and six great grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia, two sons Doug Schnicker and Dan Schnicker, brother LeRoy Schnicker, and sister Betty Olson.
The funeral service for Mr. Schnicker will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 27th, at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Brice Hughes will officiate, and interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Masks and social distancing are recommended by the family.
A memorial has been established for Zion United Church of Christ.
