Obituary
Odessa Redding Stout 101, of Cedar Rapids, IA slipped peacefully away Wednesday March 16, 2022 at The Woodlands in Cedar Rapids, IA.
She was the daughter of John B and Bonnie Wineinger Redding. Survivors include two children, Vicki (Richard) Dillon, Burlington, Richard (Nancy) Stout, Anamosa, daughter-in-law Rita Stout, Kingman, AZ, five grandchildren, John (Staci) Dillon of Kearney, MO. Ryan (Amanda) Dillon of Kansas City, MO, Benjamin (Lacey) and Jeffrey (Kelli) Stout of Anamosa, Kim (Taco) Esquibel of Kingman, AZ, 11 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of 73 years, Donald, a daughter-in-law Joyce Stout, one son, Robert Stout, one grandson, and twin great granddaughters.
Odessa was born December 28, 1920 in Downey, MO. She graduated from Danville High School in the class of 1938. She achieved her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s college in 1941. She first taught country school, earning college money working at Kresgies for 17 ½ cents an hour. Then, working as a soda jerk at college, met the love of her life, Donald Stout, on the 4th of July. They married on Easter Sunday, 1942.
Odessa lived a full and active life traveling over a century of technology, loving nature, her wrens, camping, fishing and gardening. She was a skilled seamstress, knitter, candle maker, oil painter, and one of the most skilled bargain hunters. She was proud to have substitute taught for 48 years. Odessa also was a Girl Scout leader, active in the PTA, Hetta Gilbert, King’s Daughters among others.
The funeral service for Odessa Stout will be Monday, March 21, 2022 at 1:30 PM at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ with the Reverend David Yonker officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ after the burial.
A memorial has been established for Cedar Rapids Mercy Foundation for Breast Cancer.
