Obituary
Helen M. Swore, 96 of Danville Care Center, formerly of Burlington, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2020.
Born June 9, 1924 in Illinois, she was the eldest daughter of George and Zelma Price. She married Lawrence “Larry” Charles Swore, March 7, 1946 in Burlington. He passed March 3, 2018.
Helen was a member of Danville First Baptist Church. She was a wonderful wife, a great cook, and mother and grandmother who never missed any activities. She was the first one up every morning and enjoyed playing cards and games. When she made pies, she made seven or more at a time, along with extra pie strips. Everyone fought over the pie strips! Most of Helen’s hobbies were related to working at home and at her job at Burlington Hospital. She also enjoyed St. Louis Cardinal baseball games and Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football.
She worked as a surgical technician at Burlington Hospital and the new Great River Medical Center for over 50 years. Helen was the first one at the hospital in the morning to make the coffee and prepare the rooms for surgery before her day began as a surgical tech. She was a long-term surgical employee who was employed longer than many of the doctors. When Great River Medical Center was opened, she was coaxed into staying “one more year.”
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Roger) Lundgren of Milan, IL; Donna (Larry) Beck of Danville; son, Mike (Vicki) Swore of Cedar Rapids, IA; six grandchildren, Dr. Eric (Charla) Lundgren of Knoxville, TN, Christine (Greg) Beierlein of Rock Island, IL, Brett Sutcliffe of Burlington, and Lonetta (Jason) Jackson of Danville, Susan Swore and Sarah (Nathan) Watson, both of Burlington; four step-grandchildren, Lance (Angel) Beck of Burlington, Dr. Rob (Beth) Gantz of Marshalltown, Sarah (Marc) Cross of Ely, IA, and Mindy (Erick) Amstuz of Palo, IA; sixteen great-grandchildren; thirteen step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter in infancy, Judith Irene; one step-granddaughter, Audra Mills; two sisters; and a half-brother.
A private family graveside service for Helen will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 26th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Rev. Jack Edmisson will officiate. Friends may call Friday, September 25th noon to 7:30 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date based on future Covid-19 recommendations.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Danville First Baptist Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
