Obituary
r. William “Willie” Edgar Jones, 77, of Burlington, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Danville Care Center.
Born September 15, 1943 in Burlington, he was the son of Emery Kenneth and Emma E. (Miner) Jones. He married Cheryl Anne Tomey November 13, 1971 at West Hill United Methodist Church.
Willie graduated from Burlington High School in 1961 and attended Burlington Junior College. He joined the United States Air Force, serving from January 18, 1962 until January 18, 1968 with time in Grand Forks, ND and Ankara, Turkey. He worked at Montgomery Wards and retired from Skeriks Auto Parts and Service.
Willie was a member of the Prairie Hunters Gun Club, Yarmouth Gun Club, Amateur Trapshooting Association, and the Iowa Trapshooting Association. He had been an avid trap shooter since 1965. He enjoyed Duck and Goose hunting and gun auctions. Willie was a NASCAR, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Cheryl Anne of Burlington; two sisters, Peggy J. (Earl) Davies of Reno, NV and Mary (Phil) Chiaramonte of Waukee, IA; sister-in-law, Lisa M. Haynes of Plato, MO; two brothers-in-law, Steve R. Tomey of Kingman, AZ and Mitchell R. Tomey of Coal Valley, IL; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Kenneth Jones and one sister Margaret Applegarth.
The memorial service for Willie will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, August 14th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military Rites. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, TN.
