Sherwood “Jack” Naylor
Jack Naylor, 95, passed away on June 10, 2021. Jack was born on August 14, 1925 in Center Junction, Iowa to Raymond and Pearl Naylor. He grew up in Scotch Grove, Iowa and graduated from Monticello High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on June 9, 1944 and served in the South Pacific during WWII. He saw action in Okinawa until August 15, 1945 and was then sent to China and served as a “China Marine”. The Marine Corp was always a very important part of Jack’s life.
Upon return from the war Jack married his childhood sweetheart, Alice Clark. They were married for 68 years but had known each other for over 80 years when she passed December 29, 2015. Together they had 4 daughters.
Jack farmed the Clark Family Farm until 1957 when he moved his family to Burlington, Iowa where he sold insurance for Farm Bureau Insurance. He eventually bought several independent agencies and formed The Naylor Agency. During his time as an Independent Agent, he received several recognitions for his sales.
He and Alice were very active in their church, First Presbyterian Church, where Jack served as Elder, Usher, and Sunday School superintendent. Jack and Alice were active members of the Church’s Mariners group and served as Youth Leaders and Camp Directors on behalf of the National Family Camp Commission. He served in different capacities in the Presbytery and Synod of the Presbyterian Church, USA. In past years Jack and Alice also had been very active with the Great River Ramblers Motor Home Association.
Jack is survived by his 4 daughters and their husbands, Jan (Peter) Allan of De Pere, Wisconsin; Pat (Bill) Larsen of De Pere, Wisconsin; Debbie (Andy) Opiekun of Burlington, and Alicia (Jerry) Goehring of San Francisco, California. He was a loving grandpa to 7 grandchildren, Amy Allan, Jackie (Brandon) Smith, Steven (Dagmara) Larsen, Heather (Peter) Opichka, Tim (Julie Tague) Opiekun, Joanna (Brock) Schneden, and Brian (Kirstie) Opiekun. He also had 8 great grandchildren, Zachary and Callie Smith, Kalina and Stefan Larsen, Lizzie and Sammy Opichka, and Ella and Emry Schneden who they lovingly called “Apple Jack”.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
The memorial funeral service for Jack will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. There will be a luncheon held at the church following the service. Inurnment will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Per Jack’s request memorial money can be directed to First Presbyterian Church for the Alice Naylor Scholarship Fund for Camp Wyoming.
