Mr. Charles L. Friedel, 79, of Sumner, MO, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at the Great River Hospice House.
Born October 25, 1939 in Burlington, he was the son of Charles Edgar and Edith Helen (Poggemiller) Friedel. He married Janice Kay Davis January 15, 1961 in Burlington. She preceded him in death on December 21, 2001.
Charles graduated from Burlington High School in 1957 and later, trade school for sheet metal work. He served in the United States Navy from June 9, 1958 until October 29, 1962 as a Signalman General stationed in Pearl Harbor. He was the owner of Charles Friedel & Sons Contracting, building many houses in the bottoms by Kingston. He was a commercial fisherman. Janice and Charles managed and operated The Zodiac in the early 1970's. He was also employed at R.W. Cardella Mechanical Contractor as shop foreman in Keokuk, IA and various other shops in Des Moines County.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 91, with over 59 years of service. He belonged to the American Legion Post 586 in Sumner, MO, Sumner Sportsman Club, Friends of the Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and was a lifetime founding member of the D.W. Hunting Club of Triplett, MO.
Survivors include daughter, Gina R. (Miles) Erickson of rural Burlington; son, Mick (Teresa) Friedel of Mediapolis; grandsons, Justin and Matt Friedel of Mediapolis, Cole and Luke Erickson of rural Burlington; father-in-law, Floyd "Tode" John of Burlington; brother, Les Friedel of Burlington; significant other, Shirley Fountain of Sumner, MO; sister-in-law, Linda Friedel Muir of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Kenny Friedel; mother-in-law, Dorothy John; three sisters-in-law, Rita Friedel, Shirley Friedel, and Carol Ann John; and three brothers-in-law, Richard Davis, Gary Davis, and Daryl John.
The funeral service for Mr. Friedel will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2019 at Lunning Chapel. The Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 10th at Lunning Chapel.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
