Obituary
Mark Henry Wegener, beloved son, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a friend to many, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 6, 2020. “For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:7-8)
Mark Wegener was born on July 25, 1920, the only child of Walter and Dorothy Wegener in Burlington, Iowa. Mark was a graduate of Burlington High School, the University of Iowa, graduating second in his class, earning a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. After receiving his degree, he served stateside in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, acting as a weather officer who helped pilots navigate around storm fronts in the sky. After serving in WWII, he then continued his education at Iowa State University, earning a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, where he remained for a few years as a professor. Because of his love for his family, he returned to Burlington, and worked for 33 years for an engineering firm assigned to the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, and where he retired in 1982.
On August 10, 1947, he married Leona Helen Nickelsen. In 2017, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Shortly after, Leona preceded him in death on March 22, 2018.
Survivors include their three children: a daughter, Nan (Jerry) Oliver of San Antonio, Texas; two sons-Randy (Dori) Wegener of Lone Jack, Missouri; and Dan (Joan) of New London, Iowa. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, and his twelve great-grandchildren.
Mark was a member of First United Church of Christ and also attended St. Luke's United Church of Christ. He served in the church for a lifetime. He was an avid woodworker, loved his antique car, and enjoyed outdoor activities. His greatest love was for his family and attending family gatherings.
A private family graveside service and interment will be held on Saturday, May 16th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Rev. JudyAnn Morse will officiate. A public “Celebration of Life” will be held on his 100th birthday, Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ.
