Ronald Keith “Ron” Nelson, 87, of Burlington died Friday, March 27, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born June 5, 1932 in Burlington, Iowa he was the son of Arthur W. and Nelly C. (Janzen) Nelson. He was a 1950 graduate of Burlington High School.
He married Carolyn R. Overmann on November 9, 1957 in Duluth, Minnesota.
Ron was the long-time owner of Dairy Queen in Burlington. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and has held offices in the Genealogy Society, Friends of the Burlington Public Library and the Des Moines County Historical Society.
He loved learning about the history of downtown Burlington and played piano and organ up until last year.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn Nelson of Burlington; three children, Jody (Kathy) Nelson of Westminster, Colorado, Phillip (Debbie) Nelson of Burlington and Scott (Melinda) Nelson of Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren, Leanna (Brett) White, Jonathan Nelson, Benjamin Nelson and Nathaniel Nelson; one great granddaughter Breelea White; one brother James E. (Marsha) Nelson of Burlington; one sister Caroline Hoover of Phoenix, Arizona; many nieces, nephews and friends and his beloved furry friend Doc.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Milton Hoover.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2020 at First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorials have been established for the Friends of the Library, Des Moines County Historical Society and First United Methodist Church for music.
