James Edward Carter, age 84, of Burlington died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at his residence.
Born May 22, 1935 in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Lester Guy and Marie L. (Wunderlich) Carter. He married Patricia Bailey November 24, 1957 in Burlington. She died June 26, 1997. He married Carolyn Heath June 9, 2000 in Burlington. She died April 29, 2018.
After graduating from Burlington High School in 1953, he completed an apprenticeship with Murray Ironworks. He served in the United States Army. He worked at Champion Spark Plug until his retirement in December of 1993.
James belonged to the UAW Local 1237, Moose Lodge, and A.A.R.P. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and duck hunting.
Survivors include daughter, Jeannine K. (Paul) Barnett of West Burlington; grandson, Bradley M. (Mindy) Barnett of Kensett, AR; great-granddaughter, Eadlyn Barnett; two brothers, Lester (Karen) Carter Jr. of Burlington and Warren Carter of West Burlington; step-daughter, Greta Wacker of Montana; two step-sons, Mike Schmidt and John Schmidt, both of Kent, OH; nephews; and several step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, and an infant daughter.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Carter will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 3rd at Lunning Chapel. Rev. David Yonker and Rev. Brooke Anthony will officiate. Military rites will be accorded by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
