Obituary
With deep sadness, we inform you that our mother, Mary Goodbar Lomo, passed away on April 2, 2020. She was born on May 4, 1938 to James and Caroline Goodbar in Burlington, Iowa where she grew up. After graduating from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, she enrolled in the University of Colorado where she met Leif Lomo. She married our father on September 5, 1959. They had three children, Kari, Erik, and Leif who in turn gave them three beloved in-laws and two cherished grandchildren.
Over 62 years together, Mary and Leif built a wonderful life full of family, friends, travels and experiences. Our mother always recognized her blessings and was grateful for all of them. She in turn was generous and warm. Even in her last days when her mind was no longer entirely hers, her kindness shone through. One nurse asked our father what she had been like. Dad told him stories of her—stories describing her ability to quietly engage anyone who looked like they needed company; to tease without embarrassing; to give without being noticed. The nurse said “It sounds like she was quite a lady.” Dad looked at him and said “She was the best of ladies.” And she was.
Though she spent most of her life in other places, Mom carried with her a tremendous fondness for Burlington and the friends she made there, and so it will be in Burlington where family and friends will remember and celebrate her. Services will start at the Christ Episcopal Church of Burlington, 623 North 5th St, on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 10:00 AM with Father Carl Mann officiating.
