Paul Arthur Bischoff, 91, of Burlington, died at 2:04 pm Sunday. May 15, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Feb. 18, 1914, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert and Augusta Scholl Bischoff. On Nov. 5, 1937, he married Verna May Horn in Sparrow’s Point Md. She died Aug. 19, 1998.
Mr. Bischoff was an air traffic controller with the FAA and worked at the Burlington Municipal Airport. After his retirement There, he worked at First National Bank.
He was a 1932 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a lifetime member of Zion United Church of Christ. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and served as chief radioman on the USS Gilmore. He was a member of NARFE and RSVP. He was an amateur ham radio operator, avid Chus fan, and enjoyed his yard, flowers, and riverview home. He loved classical music and was the director of the first handbell choir in Burlington at Zion United Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Pat Latty of Burlington and Nancy Broers of Mason City; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friend, Phyllis Distelhorst of Burlington.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 pm today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm.
The funeral for Mr. Bizchoff will be at 1:30 pm Wednesday at Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by Veteran’s Honor Guard of VFW Posts 9162 and 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29 will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for USS Slater restoration fund.
