Carl R. Zerneke, 44, 527 S. Plane street died about midnight Thursday at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, ia., where he had been a patient for over a month. he had been ill since February. Mr. Zerneke was a veteran of the World war, having served overseas with the marines. Prominent in various organizations here, Mr. Zerneke was treasurer of the Eagle lodge and secretary of the Painters union at the time of his death, as well as a member of the Moose and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of First Evangelica church. His occupation was that of a painter and interior decorator. He was born in Burlington Nov. 3, 1896, the son of Herman and Elizabeth Ross Zerneke, natives of Germany. On May 7, 1924, he married Miss Louise Hess of this city. She survives as do two daughters Betty and Jean, at home; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Zerneke of Burlington and three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Balzaar, Chicago, ill., Mrs. Florence Rinker and Miss Emma Zerneke of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his father and one sister. Mrs. Zerneke, who has been with her husband in Des Moines for some time, is expected to return to Burlington this afternoon, at which time funeral arrangements will be made. The body will be brought to Prugh's chapel.
