The business of the firm was sold in 1854 to Green, Thomas 7 Co. and Mr. White opened another banking house on the corner of Third and Jefferson streets, in connection with Lyman Cook, Esq. He was also President, after the dissolution of the last named firm, of the Des Moines County Savings Bank. Mr. White was also elected Mayor of the city in the year 1859 and on the breaking out of the rebellion was appointed paymaster in the army, with the rank of Major. He was on board the Ruth at the time she was burned below the mouth of the Ohio River and swam ashore in safety while his clerk and many others were lost. The Major has been i n bad health for a number of years, and has not participated actively in public affairs since his retirement from the army.
