Obituary

Mr. Paul Fredrick Swanson, 95, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Burlington, died at 12:35 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Park Place Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant after a brief illness. Born May 15, 1916, in Des Moines County, he was the son of Oscar Grover and Violet Elizabeth Waterhouse Swanson. On March 2, 1940, he married Velma Minnie Taeger in Burlington. She preceded him in death on October 7, 2002. Mr. Swanson was a Huron High School graduate. He retired from Champion Spark Plug (Federal Mogul) in 1981 after 24 years of employment. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Survivors include one daughter, Diana Broeg-Moffett (Merritt) of New London; one son, Dennis Swanson (Stacia) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Ben Swanson (Jessica Meyer), Jonna Swanson (MacDonald Farnham), Jacob Swanson, Jeff Broeg (Christine), and Kurt Broeg (Lenni); two step-grandchildren, Shawn Moffett (Joni) and Cori Moffett; four great-grandchildren, Morgan Broeg, Cormac Broeg, Maeve Broeg, and Declan Broeg; and four step-grandchildren, Kyle Wick, Ashley Wick, Jake Moffett, and Sarah Moffett. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29th, at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Swanson, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 30th, in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Jane Willan will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established in his name for Zion United Church of Christ and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
