Obituary
Harvey L. Sutcliffe, 88, of Burlington, died Sunday, January 4, 2009, at New London Nursing Home. Harvey was born March 19, 1920, the son of John and Minnie Junker Sutcliffe. He married Ruth Maxine Peterson on March 7, 1941, in Burlington. She died on August 8, 1976. Harvey was a World War II Navy veteran who participated in the invasion of Africa, Italy and France. He was awarded a citation for bravery during an amphibious assault against the enemy on the coast of Western Italy on September 8, 9 and 10 of 1943. He served on the U.S.S. Charles Carrol and participated as a member of the hatch crew, landing boats and unloading cargo holds. He was a carpenter and worked for the Burlington Community School system until his retirement in the 1980's. He was a member of the Golden Oldies and was of the Protestant faith. Harvey is survived by one daughter, Nancy Boecher of Burlington; one sister, Patricia Wenke of Argyle, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and one cousin. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Jack (John), Wayne and Kenneth; and one sister, Lucille. The funeral service for Harvey L. Sutcliffe will be held at Prugh's Chapel on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Tom Smith officiating. Interment will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for Alzheimer's Research.
