Herbert G. Bindel, 90, of 12009 S. 13th St., died at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Born March 29, 1908, at Mercier, Kan., he was the son of Joseph and Magdaline Weske Bindel. He married Eunice Viers in 1931. They divorced in 1937. He married Ruby Casteel in 1951. They divorced in 1955. He later married Doris Cox in 1969 in Mexico, Mo. She died in 1987.
During the time the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant was being built, he owned several cabins in Gulfport, Ill., which he rented out. He also operated a restaurant there at that time.
Mr. Bindel worked for JI Case Co. for 28 years before retiring. He also farmed. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 150 and the UAW Local 807, both in Burlington. He loved to garden and fish.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Dewey of Fort Polk, La., and Nancy Tucker of Burlington; six sons, Robert Bindel of Fairplay, Colo., Tom Bindel of Aurora, Colo., Richard Bindel of Forest City, Herb Bindel of Bellevieve, Ill., Denny Nyers of West Burlington, and David Myers of Burlington; 25 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edmund Bindel of Port Richey, Fla., and Harold Bindel of Effingham, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, one son, and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm today in Prugh’s Chapel.
The funeral for Mr. Bindel will be 10 am Saturday in Prugh’s Chapel with the Rev. John Sterling officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery Memory Gardens.
A memorial was established for boy’s town.
