Donald Jonathan Stout, 94, of Cedar Rapids died Friday, May 1, 2015, at Mercy
Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
Born Oct. 17, 1920, in McCallsburg, he was the son of Earl J. and Fae Duea Stout.
On April 5, 1942, he married Odessa "Dess" Redding.
Mr. Stout taught at Burlington High School for two years. In 1948, he became
principal of Horace Mann Junior High, a position he held for more than a decade. In
1959, he became executive director of secondary education for the Cedar Rapids
School District, a position he held for more than 25 years.
He graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1941. He earned a master's degree in plant
physiology. In 1964, he earned his Ph.D. in school administration. His doctoral dissertation became a
textbook for college classes.
He served as an officer in the Navy from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He was a convoy escort in
the North Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. He later taught largecaliber gunnery techniques and was
skipper of a sub chaser, retiring with the rank of commander.
He and colleague Ralph Plagman established Metro High School, an alternative high school. He and
Arnold Salsbury formed a committee to draft plans for the beginning of Area 10 Community College,
which became Kirkwood Community College. He evaluated schools in Germany.
He was a member of North Central Association, Pi Delta Kappa, NCSSP, TriBeta and Reserve
Officers Association. He was Kiwanis Young Man of the Year in 1948.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping and time with family. He was known for his boathandling skills
and advising the secret to a long marriage was to be honest, dependable, loving and tolerant.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Vicki Dillon of Burlington; two sons, Robert Stout of Kingman,
Ariz., and Richard Stout of Anamosa; five grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and one greatgreatgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, twin greatgrandchildren, his parents and one brother.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.
The funeral for Mr. Stout will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Graveside
services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
A memorial has been established for the family to create a scholarship for Metro High School.
