Virginia Mae Stoner, 70, of Burlington for the past 1 1/2 years, and in the late 1940's and early 1950's, formerly of Mediapolis, Humboldt, Centerville, Iowa Falls, and Mission, Texas, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in Palestine, Texas. Born April 8, 1930, in Mediapolis, she was the daughter of John and Esther Carlson DeFosse. She married Franklin Arley Stoner on Oct. 2, 1949, in Burlington. He died Oct. 25, 2000. Mrs. Stoner was a graduate of Compton (Calif.) High School. She owned and operated Stoner's A & W Restaurant in Humboldt for 15 years, retiring in 1978. She was a long-time member of Humboldt United Church of Christ, and attended St. Luke United Church of Christ. She volunteered at Great River Medical Center, participated in Prime Time, and was a member of Golden Oldies, and Elks Lodge 1674 in Iowa Falls. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Opheim of Harlan, and Susan Stoner of Salem, Ore.; three sons, Dennis Stoner of Woodbine, Michael Stoner of Humboldt, and Mark Stoner of St. Louis, Mo.; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Carl DeFosse of Burlington, Ray and Gary DeFosse, both of Lakewood, Calif., and Larry DeFosse of Santa Maria, Calif.; two sisters, Beverly Oakman of Norwalk, Calif., and Sonya Grubb of Thornton, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, and two sisters. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Stoner will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Vicki Engelmann officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial service will be in Humboldt at a later date. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.
