Bernice M. Stoermer, 93, of West Burlington, died at 6:40 PM Thursday, September 28, 2006, at the Great River Medical Center, Klein Center in Burlington. Born May 28, 1913, in Hutchinson, KS, she was the daughter of Lewis E. and Gladys B. Spencer Fletcher. On October 13, 1933, she married Robert E. Wilkinson in Des Moines. They later divorced. She then married William "Art" Arthur Stoermer on October 20, 1956 in Burlington. While at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, she majored in Journalism. She was very active in various organizations. While living in Metuchen, New Jersey, she was involved in The League of Women Voters (Press Chairman), Women's Club, War Services (Menlo Park), Daughters of America (Past Council), Presbyterian Church Guild, Merchant's Club, Scholarship Fund, Metuchen High School (Class Vice President and Chairman), Metuchen Recorder, and Society Parties. In 1945, she served the American Red Cross as a Press Reporter in Coleman, Texas. In 1954, she moved to West Burlington. While there, she worked for Clark Drug Stores, served as Den Mother for West Burlington Girl Scout's Den Four, served many years with Burlington Care Center, Klein Center, and R.S.V.P., and in 1983, she was a Hospice Graduate. Mrs. Stoermer enjoyed gardening, knitting, crochet, playing cards, and helping others Survivors include one son, Lewis "Lou" Wilkinson of Burlington; one grandson, Scott Wilkinson of Iowa City, IA; two granddaughters, Shelley Mundt of Whitehouse, TX and Melanie Brown of Burlington; six great-grandchildren, Matthew, David, Elizabeth, Joshua, Braeden, and Cody; two sisters, Lois Shotwell of Murray, KY and Elaine Swanson of Omaha, NE; many nieces and nephews; and many other relatives in El Reno, OK, Hutchinson, KS, Los Angeles, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Seattle, WA, and in Utah, Delaware, and Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, and a baby sister, Beverly Fletcher in 1932. Upon her request, her body has been cremated. There will be no visitation. The Memorial Service for Mrs. Stoermer will be 2:00 PM, Monday, October 2, in the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Maurice Moore officiating. Inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Animal Shelter.
