Obituary
James Wade Stockdale, 85, of Amarillo, died on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Jim's Christian burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2010, in the family grounds at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Jim was born on May 4, 1924, in Burlington, Iowa. He was the youngest of five children born to Sidney Wade and Anna Rolf Stockdale. While growing up in Burlington, Jim was one of its outstanding athletes, lettering in football, baseball, and track. He played football at The University of Iowa and Iowa State Teachers College. Jim served during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corp, and was stationed on the Island of Tinian as the war began its march to the end. Jim retired from Amarillo Air Conditioning and Sheet Metal, Inc., where he was in business with his brother, Forrest. Jim studied the architectural designs of Buckminster Fuller, and, to our knowledge, designed, fabricated, and constructed Amarillo's only geodesic dome home. Jim enjoyed good music, which included jazz, the Big Band era, and Broadway musicals, and dancing to their rhythms. He tutored in the public schools through the HOSTS program. He kept current with his good friends and their families, and was a great supporter of Tom Landry's Cowboys. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce and Forrest; his sister, Martha Hock; and nephew, Ron Hock. He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Anglemier of San Mateo, California; and his Amarillo family: sister-in-law Mary Lou Stockdale; nieces and their husbands, Kathy and Lewis Thomas, Ann and Jim Conkling, Becky and Richard Booth; and nephew and wife Sid and Janetta Stockdale of Aledo, Texas. Jim is also survived by nieces and nephews: Vada S. Hollingsworth, Pat S. Varner, Terrence Bruce Stockdale, Diana A. Berry, Cynthia A. Lemos, Mary Anglemier, Carolyn H. Bergman, Jan H. Story and James Wade Hock, their spouses, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. His constant caregiver and companion for the past years was Holly Sanson, who lovingly cared for his needs and provided comfort for him. Jim was a good neighbor, a good friend, and best of all, our uncle. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15, 2010, at the funeral home.
