James "Jim" Newton Stewart, 91, of Burlington, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, December 4, 2009, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born January 14, 1918, in Morning Sun, he was the son of Ernest Manley and Mary Blanche Timmons Stewart. On June 1, 1941, he married Evelyn Louise Atherton in Mediapolis. She died May 9, 2009. Mr. Stewart worked 22 years in research and develop- ment at Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison, and 15 years in tool and die at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, retiring in 1983. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one son, Larry Stewart of Danville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, his parents, and three brothers. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Stewart will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Deb Miller-Kinney officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for First Presbyterian Church.
