Andy “Dan” Bied, 72, of West Burlington, died at 2:30 pm Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Born Nov. 21, 1925, in Burlington, he was the son of George C. and Lynda Danielson Bied. On Sept. 11, 1973, he married Mildred C. “Millie” Stodgell in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Bied worked in his father’s drug store before WWII. He was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving as a rifleman in 106th Infantry Division, during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent five months working in a German coal mine as a prisoner of war. He worked for 26 ½ years at Mason and Hanger at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, retiring in 1987. He also worked for KBUR radio and The Hawk Eye. He was the author of 12 self-published books, including six that dealt with Burlington history, one with West Burlington history, two on WWII, and the others on jazz. He wrote for the Shopper’s Spree for more than 25 years.
He was a member of the 106th Infantry Division Association and a life member of VFW of Burlington. He also was a watercolor artist.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Sunday at Prugh’s Chapel.
The funeral for Mr. Beid will be at 1:30 pm Monday at Prugh’s Chapel. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.
A memorial has been established.
