Barbara Jean Sorenson, 87, of Burlington, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa on Tuesday, November 19, 2013.
Born on December 15, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Paul A. and Mary Robinson Ruberg Buettner. She married Harold D. "Hal" Sorenson on December 28, 1950 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on November 8, 1992.
Barbara started teaching at Mediapolis where she taught English literature and history. She taught at every middle school in Burlington - Oak Street, James Madison, Horace Mann and Apollo Central. She established and organized the first library at James Madison School. She was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society, AARP, Order of Eastern Star - White Star Chapter, Midwest Decoy Association, Burlington Women's Literature Club and King's Daughters. She was also a member as well as a vice president of the Humane Society. She enjoyed spending summers in Maine at their ocean front home. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She is survived by one son, Douglas C. Sorenson of Burlington, Iowa; one brother, Charles A. (Mary Ann) Buettner of Iron Mountain, Michigan; one granddaughter, Gabrielle Sorenson and one grandson, Hunter Sorenson, both of Burlington, Iowa; several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harold.
Funeral services for Barbara Jean Sorenson will be held on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Ryan Cosgrove will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel on Sunday afternoon from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
