Obituary
Roy William Sommerfeld, 84, of Burlington, died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born November 13, 1923, in Burlington, he was the son of Frank and Hazel Johnson Sommerfeld. On July 20, 1950, he married Willa Elaine Hull in Burlington. Mr. Sommerfeld was a 1942 graduate of Burlington High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving three years of which one and a half were spent in Saipan. Mr. Sommerfeld worked for Waugh Brothers, Baker Oil Co. for many years, owned and operated a convenience store and worked at Community Action of Southeast Iowa from 1984-2004 as a bookkeeper, retiring from there as fiscal officer after 20 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 52, and a former member of Elks and Eagles. He was very active with the Democratic Party, knowing all presidential candidates in the past. He played the organ and keyboard by ear and loved to read, keeping involved in current events. Survivors include his wife, Willa Sommerfeld of Burlington; one brother, Paul Sommerfeld of Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield; two sisters, Dorothy (Tom) Lindoff of Burlington; and Lucille (Joe) Allender of Rapid City, South Dakota; and 12 nieces and nephews. His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death. Memorials have been established for Des Moines County Humane Society, First United Methodist Church and Community Action of Southeast Iowa.
