Twyla G. "Doll" Gerdner, 93, of Burlington, died 6:07 p.m. Wedensday, January 17th at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center.
Born September 20, 1924 in Winfield, Iowa, she was the daughter of William Robert and Clara (Martin) Loyd. She married Hugh T. Snyder on December 8, 1945 in Des Moines. He died July 16, 1975. She then married Charles Gerdner in February of 1979 in Burlington. He died August 1, 1990.
Twyla was a 1945 graduate of the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse. Her career of nursing spanned over 50 years, working more recently for Dr. Hoth from July of 1970 until January 2, 1999. She previously worked for the Burlington Hospital, Dr. Robert Rowley, Surgeons Inc., with Drs. Lohman, Saar, Mazur and Smith and she was the IRC plant nurse and the I.A.A.P plant nurse for brief periods.
She was member of First United Methodist Church until she transferred her membership in 1979 after her marriage to Charlie to Spring Grove United Methodist Church. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, E.C. Blackman Chapter. She quilted with the First United Methodist Church Quilters. Upon her retirement, she designed, pieced and appliqued a flower garden quilt. She enjoyed being on the river and time spent at the cabin, fishing, trees and mushroom hunting. She loved watching birds and deer and other wildlife.
She was very generous with her time and showed unconditional love to her family. She thoroughly enjoyed time spent with her kids and grandkids. The highlight of her life were her great granddaughters and being "Grandma Doll"
Survivors include one daughter, Ann (Frank) Hills of Burlington; two grandsons, Bradley (Rose) Hills and Brian Hills; four great granddaughters, Kayla Hills of Fort Madison and Tatum Hills, McKenzie Hills and Pamela Hills all of Iowa City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Hugh and Charlie, one son Hal-Boy and three brothers and one sister.
The funeral service for Twyla will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 22nd at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Melissa Bracht-Wagner will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
