Mrs. Jane V. Snider, 93, of Burlington died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2015, at Burlington Care Center.
Born January 15, 1922 in Mt. Pleasant, she was the daughter of Fred E. and Grace Lloyd Beck. Mrs. Snider was the first baby girl born at the Soldiers & Sailors Hospital (now Henry County Health Center.)
Mrs. Snider was raised on a farm at Oakland Mills and attended Oakland Mills Grade School and church. She was a 1940 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. After enjoying 26 years on the farm, she married Lee Edward Snider on October 17, 1948 in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1991.
Mrs. Snider worked at Ben Franklin 5 & 10 Variety Store in Mt. Pleasant, Montgomery Ward, Sears & Roebuck and Fanny Farmer Candies. She was also employed at Burlington Medical Center.
Her faith and church were important to Mrs. Snider. She was a 63 year member of the Presbyterian Church, first at Westminster and later at First Presbyterian in Burlington. She served the church as a deacon, Presbyterian Women, visiting shut-ins and helped with many church dinners. She was a lifetime member of the DAV Auxiliary and served as a past commander.
Mrs. Snider enjoyed word puzzles, reading, camping at Seven Ponds, country-western music, spiritual songs and loved spending time with her family. She was also a caregiver. She became her father's farmhand after he suffered a heart attack and cared for her husband during his battle with cancer.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Snider of Burlington and Richard Snider of West Burlington; two grandsons, Andy Snider and Jeremy Starman; three great grandchildren; one sister, Grace "Pat" White of Peoria, Illinois and special daughter, Joan Stellern of Ft. Madison.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, daughter-in-law Sharon and sister Betty.
The memorial funeral service for Mrs. Snider will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26th, at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Deb Kinney and Steven Parker officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service on Thursday.
Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church, Des Moines County Humane Society and Great River Hospice.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
