Bruce E. Smothers, 85, of Burlington, died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Jan. 6, 1916, in Winchester, Ill., he was the son of Albert Earl and Grace Ball Smothers. He married Vera Ferne Gorman on Feb. 6, 1960, in Burlington. Mr. Smothers was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a union sheet metal worker for 50 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Sheet Metal Workers Local 91. He enjoyed his cabin on the river, fishing and hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; one son, Darrell Smothers of Clearwater, Fla.; two daughters, Sheila Morath of Roseville, Ill., and Vicki Baldosier of Fairfield; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two brothers and one son-in-law. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Prugh's Chapel. The funeral for Mr. Smothers will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel, with the Revs. Forrest and Sue Krummel officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corps League.
