Obituary
Pauline E. Smith, 88, of Burlington died at 4:50 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011 at Burlington Care Center. Born October 17, 1922 in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of Guy E. and Grace Marie (Keitzer) Maxwell. On May 19, 1946 she married Richard "Dick" James Smith in Winfield, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1993.
Mrs. Smith was a 1940 graduate of Burlington High School and also a graduate of Burlington Business College.
Mrs. Smith worked for the Des Moines County Treasurer's Office in registration of car licenses. Along with her husband, Dick, she founded Smith Motor Sales in 1955 and Green Acres Mobile Home Park in 1967.
Mrs. Smith was a member of First United Church of Christ and King Daughters. She was a very accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing and time at the cabin. Her biggest enjoyment was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, Ken (Sandy) Smith and James (Cheryl) Smith both of Burlington; five grandchildren, Bryan Smith, Andy Smith, Dan Smith, Kristy Green and Laura Nyaronga; five great-grandchildren, Parker and Peyton Smith, Brynn and Hudson Green and Alex Nyaronga; one brother, Virgil Maxwell of Urbandale; three sisters, Virginia Hillyard and Norma Haight both of Winfield and Naomi Lindell of New London; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 7th in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 8th in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. JudyAnn Morse will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.
