Lena Elizabeth Smith, 86, of Burlington, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington. Born March 17, 1924, in Fonda, she was the daughter of Clarence Lester and Esther Wood Heller. On January 7, 1943, she married Lawrence B. "Pete" Smith in Kahoka, MO. He died July 15, 2000. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, and for many years she did child care in her home. She was known as an excellent cook and an accomplished seamstress. She helped her husband film local high school ball games and weddings, and worked at the Burlington Bee's ballpark concession for 15 years. She was a member of Community of Christ Church, American Legion Post 52 Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars 7641 Auxiliary, and the 40 & 8. She loved to dance, read, crochet, and be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Cherlyn Jordan of Carthage, Ill., and Kathy Marmion of West Burlington; two sons, Larry B. Smith of Schertz, Texas, and Bryan L. Smith of Montrose; two sisters, Monica Gilleland of Bartlesville, Okla., and Peggy Brock of Spencer; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, one sister, two nieces, and one nephew. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with Jerry Wiemann officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be at the Hass-Thielen Community Room following the interment. A memorial has been established.
