Howard Ray Smith, 67, of Burlington died at 2:43 a.m. Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born October 1, 1941, in McCleansboro, IL, he was the son of Paul Max and Ethel Swank Smith. On March 2, 1963, he married Judith L. Dietsch in Burlington. Mr. Smith worked in construction, and worked for Per Mar Security at J. I. Case Co. for 10 years. He was president of Labor Local 525. He served in the Navy. He was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include his wife; one son, Wayne Smith of Burlington; three grandchildren; two step-grand- children; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Hendershot of Newark, Ohio; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two half-brothers. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Smith will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with Elder Alan B. Ourth officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
