Ethel Kathleen Smith, 92, of Burlington, died at 8:00 am. Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at Burlington Care Center in Burlington. Born February 25, 1916 in Morning Sun, she was the daughter of Clinton and Nellie May Kerr Schofield. She was raised by her father and paternal grandmother due to the death of her mother and stepmother. On August 2, 1936, she married Delmer M. Smith in Quincy, IL. He died November 20, 1992. Mrs. Smith worked at Riley's Café, as a paymaster at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, as a secretary at Siems Farm Equipment Company, a bookkeeper at Burlington Golf Club, and did bookkeeping in her home, retiring in 1973. She was a 1934 graduate of Morning Sun High School. She was a former member of United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun and a member of First Congregational Church in Burlington. She enjoyed fishing, entertaining, growing roses and gardening. Survivors include nieces and nephews; and special friends Ray and Barbara Mendenhall and Cathy LaFrenier all of Burlington. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church. The funeral for Mrs. Smith will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Jonathan Noble officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for First Congregational Church.
