Archie O. Smith, 88, of Burlington, died at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Center. Born September 22, 1920, near Grants Lick, Kentucky, he was the son of Henry H. and Edith Losey Smith. On April 15, 1945, he married Ann L. Thompson of Canton, Missouri. Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran, serving in the 91st Tank Reconnaissance Squadron of General Patton's Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, three Bronze Star Medals, European-African Medal, Eastern Campaign Medal, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome, Arno Medals, World War II Victory Medal, and ten ribbons. His unit received the French Unit Citation. Mr. Smith was a member of the Plumber and Fitters Local 212 of Burlington and Asbestos Workers Local 81 of Cedar Rapids. He was a life member of DAV and VFW of Burlington. Survivors include his wife, Ann L. Smith of Burlington; one daughter, Sherry E. Stewart of Burlington; and sister, Lucille Benedict of Burlington. His parents and one brother, Henry H. Smith, preceded him in death.
