Maxine M. Slocum, 94, of Burlington, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Center. Born April 4, 1915, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Truman H. and Clara Bicklen Alley. On September 27, 1940, she married John H. Slocum in Burlington. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2007. Mrs. Slocum was a graduate of Burlington High School and Burlington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a homemaker and a registered nurse. She was a member of Shining Star King's Daughters' Circle and Jane Delano Retired Nurses. She was an avid reader and, enjoyed cooking and baking pies, cakes, and rolls. Survivors include one son, Steve (Trudy) Slocum of Burlington; one daughter, Diane Timmerman of Burlington; two grandchildren, Jennifer Slocum of Burlington and Traci Timerman of Des Moines; one great-granddaughter, Isabelle Slocum; one sister, Muriel Cornick of Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband; grandson, Brenton Slocum; parents; and sister, Bernice Wallman, preceded her in death. Friends may call from noon until 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 16th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service for Mrs. Slocum will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 17th, in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Moberg officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Jane Delano Retired Nurses Scholarship Fund.
