Carolyn Kay Sloan, age 67, of rural Mediapolis and formerly of Burlington, IA, passed away at 5:55 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2009, at Great River Medical Center Hospice House. She was born at Burlington Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Iowa, on Thursday, November 5, 1942, to Albert J. and Della E. (Johnson) Rheinschmidt. On May 26, 1963, she married Robert Henry Sloan, Jr. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in West Burlington, Iowa. Mrs. Sloan graduated from Burlington High School in 1960, and worked as a receptionist at the Des Moines County Social Welfare Office until 1965 when she became a homemaker and raised four children. Later she worked as a secretary in several lawyers' offices, and in data processing at True Value Hardware. Carolyn enjoyed her family, particularly her five grandchildren, reading, gardening, taking photographs, watching NASCAR, and using her computer. She is survived by her mother Della Rheinschmidt of Burlington; brother Ralph Rheinschmidt of Maryland; sister Lois Rheinschmidt of Burlington; her husband, Robert Sloan and son Mike Sloan of Mediapolis; son Steve Sloan of Urbandale; daughter Debbie (Tague) Thoennes of Minnesota; and son Bobby (Jennifer) Sloan of West Burlington. Her grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her father and two nephews. In accordance with Carolyn's wishes, cremation has been accorded. Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday, November 30th, at Lunning Chapel. There will be no family visitation. Graveside memorial services will be held on Tuesday, December 1st, at 1:00 p.m. in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Great River Hospice. House.
