Efrosini J. "Frances" Skarlis, 92, of Burlington, died at 9:53 am Sunday, July 22, 2012, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born October 21, 1919, in Gargaliani, Messinia, Greece, she was the daughter of Anastacios and Kyriaki Yiannopoulos Poulopoulos. On July 27, 1947, she married John J. Skarlis in Strofila, Halkida, Greece. He died January 2, 1989. Frances was a homemaker. She had briefly worked at Selby's and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Island, IL. She was dedicated to her family and their well being and was known as an exceptional cook and gardener. She will be dearly missed, may her memory be eternal. Survivors include three daughters, Jane (George) Keil of Flower Mound, TX, Joanne Ashmun of Longmont, CO, and Morfoula (Steven) Rowan of Burlington; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Thomna, Adonia, Eleftheria, Sophia, and Aphrodite, and two brothers, Panayotis and Costandis. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mrs. Skarlis will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Thielen Funeral Home with Father Christ Margellos officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial. Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island, IL, and Zion United Church of Christ.
