Article about his death:
Batavia- A rural Batavia man died Saturday afternoon after fire destroyed a bedroom where he was sleeping.
Howard Berry, 92, was pronounced dead at University Hospitals in Iowa City a few hours after the blaze was discovered at his home, 1 ½ miles east of Batavia around 2:30 pm.
Batavia Fire Chief Don Wells said the blaze was confined to an upstairs bedroom where Berry was taking a nap.
Wells said firefighters found Berry on the floor after he apparently had tried to leave the room.
Berry’s wife, Penny, was in the house at the time but was not injured.
A relative said Penny Berry was downstairs when she heard her husband scream or help.
She went upstairs and found the bedroom “full of smoke,” Dayle Swartz said.
Wells said the fire might have been started by an electric blanket or a pipe that he might have smoked.
The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire.
