Mr. Verdon J. "Red" Siefken, 91, of Burlington died at 9:20 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis
Born April 21, 1921 in Des Moines County, he was the son of Chester and Helen Vorwerk Siefken. On November 11, 1941 he married Betty M. Schmeiser in Dodgeville. She preceded him in death on February 22, 1997.
Mr. Siefken was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked for the US Postal Service for 11 years. Mr. Siefken coached 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade basketball at St. Paul's School and Little League baseball.
Mr. Siefken was of the Catholic faith and a member of the Eagles. He was known as the "man on Sunnyside who walked his dog."
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Baugher of Burlington and one son, William Siefken of Phoenix, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, eight brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call from noon until 6 p.m. Monday, January 21st, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Siefken will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 22nd, at SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church. Father David Steinle will be the celebrant. Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
