Obituary
Galen La-Verne "Shep" Shepherd, 60, of West Bur-lington, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Born Sept. 21, 1946, in Ottumwa, he was the son of Ivan L. and Wanda Nadine Pebbles Shepherd. On May 7, 1966, he married Linda Carpenter in Burlington. Mr. Shepherd was a truck driver for Churchill Trucking Co. and retired from Yellow Trucking Co. in 2002. He was a 1965 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a member of First United Church of Christ and Loyal Order of the Moose. He enjoyed racing, sprint cars, fishing, reading, hunting and four-wheeling. He was known as the Mayor of Drunken Holler. Survivors include his wife; his mother; one daughter, Laurie Smith of Burlington; two sons, Kevin Shepherd of Oak Grove, Minn., and Mark Shepherd of Burlington; six grandchildren; two sisters, Nelda Jackson of Augusta and Noreda Schnedler of Burlington; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents and one brother. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. His body will be cremated after the visitation. A celebration of life and bonfire on Mr. Shepherd's birthday will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at his home, 12036 Little Flint Road, West Burlington. The celebration of life service will be at 6:30 p.m., with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. A private graveside inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for First United Church of Christ and Great River Hospice.
