Obituary
Mary Theresa Shellmyer died August 9, 2008, in Colorado Springs, CO, after a long battle with chronic lung disease. She was born January 13, 1908 in West Bend, IA. She had 11 brothers and sisters. She graduated from West Bend High School and Ellsworth College. She married Walter LeRoy Shellmyer on January 23, 1927. They lived in West Bend, IA, Algona, IA, Columbus Junction, IA, and Burlington, IA. In Burlington, Mary worked nearly 40 years at the Hotel Burlington, serving there at private parties. She also catered for parties in many private homes. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Royal Neighbors of America. She was petite in stature, but strong in mind and attitude. Her greatest accomplishments were her life as wife and mother. She also took great delight in her yard work and tending to her flowers. Her lawn always looked perfectly manicured and she painted her sidewalks annually. She did her own mowing well into her 90's. She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Kaiser of Colorado Springs; two sons, James Leroy of Hollywood, FL, and Robert John (wife, Jean) of Washington, IA; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her 11 brothers and sisters. We treasure our many memories of Mary, and are here to celebrate her reunion with her maker, God.
