John Carl Shaw, 80, of Burlington, died at 11:11 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born September 25, 1928, in Fairfield, he was the son of George J. and Minnie M. Vickers Shaw. On March 22, 1966, he married Carol M. Conlee in Monmouth, Illinois. Mr. Shaw worked as a heavy equipment operator at Raid Quarry. He served in the Navy. He was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed traveling, cooking and old planes and trains. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark Edward Shaw of Davenport and Colin Shaw of Burlington; three daughters, Mona Lynne Shaw of Des Moines, Jackie Smith of Navy Camp Liberty in Iraq, and April Schulthies of West Burlington; one brother, William Clark Shaw of Burlington; two sisters, Margaret E. Mesecher of Burlington, and Mary Virginia Bolander of Sturgen, MO; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, one grandchild, his parents and three brothers. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Shaw will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for lost service men who have died in the line of duty.
