Mary Elizabeth Sharkey, 91, of Burlington, died at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born January 13, 1924 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Ludwig A. and Manghild L. Rapp Swan. On July 8, 1945 she married William Wayne Sharkey in Burlington. He died August 11, 2006.
Mary and Bill owned and operated a Beauty Salon after they were married. Mary then was Choir Director for Messiah Lutheran Church, worked for Steamboat Stop and was a Homemaker.
She was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School, and attended Burlington Junior College, and Augustana College at Rock Island, IL.
Mary was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Treble Clef, and Chapter NI of P.E.O. and sang with Bel Canto for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan G. Hinz of San Mateo, Calif. And three grandchildren; Angela, Kathryn, and Martin Sharkey.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, one sister and three brothers.
Visitation will begin after noon on Tuesday until 8 p.m. at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Messiah Lutheran Church.
The funeral service for Mary Elizabeth Sharkey will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 27th, at Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Susanne Smith officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials for Messiah Lutheran Church and Great River Hospice have been established.
