Irl Edgar Shamp, 73, of Burlington, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2006, at Great River Medical Center. Born December 13, 1932 in Fort Madison, he was the son of Lyle V. and Jessie E. Andrews Shamp. On December 14, 1958 he married Marilyn K. King in Revere, Missouri. Mr. Shamp was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a member of the 1951 Burlington High School State Championship football team. He was a Korean War Navy veteran serving from December of 1952 until December of 1956 and was a machinist mate serving on the USS Hector repair ship. Mr. Shamp was a Burlington police officer and captain, serving for 24 years and retiring in 1985. He then worked as security captain for Pinkerton at J.I. Case and until he retired in 1994. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1957, Iowa State Policemen’s Association, Chiefs of Police Association, Keeper of the Wampum of the Honor Society of the Silver Tomahawk, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, Youngs Lake Campground in Kirkwood, Illinois, assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 45, member of Troop 3 and received the District Award of Merit in 1976. He was a die-hard Cubs fan. Survivors include his wife of over 47 years, Marilyn Shamp of Burlington; three sons, Sean (Julie) Shamp of Burlington, Brad (Abbe) Shamp of Lantana, Florida and Rick (Kelly) Shamp of Burlington; foster son, Terry (Darlene) Miller of Roselle, Illinois; four grandchildren, Lucas, Justin and Mackahlan Shamp and Lacee Nordgren. His parents preceded him in death.
