Shani K. Smith, 40 formerly of Burlington, died on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at her home in Dubuque, Iowa.
Shani was born on September 15, 1970, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Steve and Diana (Johnson-Smith) Gonzalez.
Shani graduated from Burlington High School in 1988. She was employed at Hope Haven in Burlington, Iowa and in 1994 moved to Dubuque to work for Hillcrest Family Services where she was employed for 10 years. She attended Clarke College to earn her BSN. Shani began working at Medline as an accounts manager. She was a sports “junkie” participating and watching all she could, especially the Duke Blue Devils. Shani enjoyed spending time with her Medline family, traveling and listening to nearly any type of music. Her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family and friends.
Shani is survived by one daughter: Jordan Borrego of Dubuque, Iowa; one son: Dario Borrego of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her parents: Steve and Diana Gonzalez, of Burlington, Iowa; one sister: Noe’mi (Ivan “Spike” Simmons) Gonzalez, of Burlington, Iowa; five brothers, Patrick (Sabrina) Smith of Aliso Viejo, California, Shawn Smith of Burlington, Iowa, Steve Gonzalez of Burlington, Iowa, Jamie Gonzalez of Burlington, Iowa and Kaid (Alisen) Gonzalez of Burlington, Iowa; two step-sisters: Mona (Mark) Farran of Burlington, Iowa and Lynn (Tom) Moser of Burlington, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Funeral services for Shani K. Smith will be held Sunday evening, March 6, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, 317 N. 4th St., Burlington, IA. Fr. Bruce DeRammelaere will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery on Monday, March 7, at 11:00 a.m.
Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011, at Behr’s Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, Iowa and from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the Prugh Funeral Home, 317 N. 4th St., Burlington, Iowa.
A memorial in memory of Shani K. Smith has been established.
