Carl Schwerin, 80, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 6,2006, at his home. Born March 16,1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Carl Christ and Hazel Amelia Timmerman Schwerin. On Jan. 22,1944, he married Barbara Hall in Burlington. Mr. Schwerin worked for Murray Iron Works for 20 years. He was owner operator of SSS Grey Iron Casting from 1963 to 1973 before he retired. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the V.F.W. Post 2369, American Legion Post 37 and B.P.O.E. ofMcAllen, Texas. He loved woodworking and fishing. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Peggy Shipley and her husband Otis of Carman, IL, and Sally Hand and her husband Bob of Burlington; five grandchildren, Dan Shipley, Doug Shipley and Wade Shipley all of West Burlington, Jolie Boich of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Chad Carter of Cedar Rapids; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Schwerin ofVera Beach, Florida; and a sister, Barbara Fritz of Burlington. His parents and one brother preceded him in death. The graveside memorial funeral service for Mr. Schwerin will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. John Gauike officiating. There will be no visitation. According to the wishes of Mr. Schwerin his body has been cremated. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
